A team at the University of Pittsburgh conducted a two — year study in which a young man who was paralyzed from the neck down learned how to control a robot arm using brain implants. Now scientists have added sensory feedback to the implant, which allows you to feel everything that the robot hand touches.
Tests showed that the sense of touch dramatically increased the performance of the subject. The average time to complete the sequence of actions of lifting-moving-throwing an object decreased, and in about half of the cases, the difference was statistically significant. During the time it took the participant to complete nine tasks with the sensor system turned off, he was able to complete more than a dozen with the active system.
The experiments have so far been conducted with only one participant, and the team will have to scale the study to multiple subjects.
